Pet-friendly decoration for your home

Halloween is a season of magic and mystery, but it can be bewildering for our four-legged friends. Here are some tips to ensure your home is both festive and pet-safe:

  • Candle Alternatives:

Rather than traditional candles in pumpkins, consider LED flameless candles. They offer the same glow without the fire risk, ensuring your pets stay safe.

  • Pet-Friendly Decor:

Choose decorations that won't harm your pets if they decide to investigate. Opt for non-toxic, pet-safe items like fabric or plush instead of sharp or easily ingestible objects.

  • Candy Awareness:

Keep Halloween candies out of reach of curious pets. Many candies can be harmful to animals, so ensure they're securely stored.

DIY Halloween Cat Costume

A perfect easy costume to make for your cat is bat wings! It’s perfect for Halloween and looks good on every cat.

Materials you'll need:

  • 1/4 yard of fabric (black, or any color you prefer)

  • A piece of stiff craft interfacing (Pellon Peltex 71F or similar)

  • About 3 inches of sticky-back Velcro

  • Your pet's regular harness (this won't alter the harness permanently)

Steps to make the costume:

  1. Cut & Prepare:

    • Cut two wing pieces from the fabric. Cut one piece of interfacing following the wing shape.

  2. Attach Interfacing:

    • Fuse the interfacing to one of the fabric wing pieces for stability.

  3. Sew & Turn:

    • Sew the fabric wing pieces together, leaving an opening. Turn the wings right side out.

  4. Close Opening:

    • Stitch up the opening. Optionally, add topstitching for design.

  5. Add Velcro:

    • Attach the hook side of Velcro to the center back of the wing.

  6. Attach to Harness:

    • Sandwich your pet's harness strap between the Velcro pieces.

  7. Dress Your Pet:

    • Put the winged harness on your pet. If they usually like to wear their harness, they will love these bat wings! 🦇

If you decide to dress up your pets for Halloween, keep their comfort and safety in mind:

  1. Comfort First: Make sure the costume fits well and doesn't restrict your pet's movement, hearing, or vision.

  2. Test Runs: Let your pet try on the costume for short periods in advance to ensure they're comfortable with it.

  3. Supervision: When in costume, supervise your pet closely to prevent them from chewing or getting tangled in their attire.
